About
What I Do
I make everything using only hand tools and traditional methods. I use full grain, veg-tan leather. I also sew using linen thread, ensuring the strength of your items. Every stitch is hand sewn. In fact, the only automatic machine I have in the shop is a vacuum cleaner, and that begs to be used. What I like most about handmade work is the care and attention that goes into it. Every detail, every stitch, every line is put there by my hands. To me, it makes every product unique and personal.
About the maker
My name is Farand, which literally translates to "the sharp edge of a blade." I find that I like to put a little bit of who I am into the things I make. And so I created Sharp Side Leather. My way of sharing what I like most with you. I love how efficient our modern world is, but equally so the character in older goods. What I make is for everyday use with the standard of luxury goods. For the daring and sophisticated. For anyone that wants to not only look sharp, but feel sharp too.
Some notable practices
Your leather is certified
All of the leather I use comes from tanneries that are certified by the Consorzio Vera Pelle. The Consortium’s mission is to safeguard and regulate the production of Tuscan vegetable tanned leather. All certified tanneries must follow production regulations that guarantee eco-friendly manufacturing processes. Learn more on their site, here.
Vegetable tanning
Leather that is vegetable tanned, or veg-tan for short, has been processed in vats of tannins derived from plant oils. This process is completely natural and takes up to two months to complete. Vegetable tanning deepens the natural colors and fibers of the hide, and is the reason for the rich patina that develops over time.
Age old traditions
Your leather originates from Tuscany, Italy, the leather capital of the world. Tanneries there still use traditional vegetable tanning methods. My favorite tannery is known for their centuries-old method of tanning with tree barks.
Ethical practices
The consortium oversees regulations in 10 specified sectors. Two of them state that no animal is harmed for its skin, and the waste from the various processing steps is turned into useful raw materials for other supply chains.
